Congratulations Incessantly Weeping Ghost!

The teens will stop having sex and just look at you.  The boy will be uncomfortable, but still aroused.  The mood will clearly have left the girl completely.  She’ll reach across the bed to grab her shirt and slip into it in one fluid motion.  The boy will pout in bed next to her, frowning.

“Is there something we can do to help?” she’ll ask.

You’ll shake your spectral head as you continue to sob uncontrollably.  The tears will be very, very real and very, very wet, so a puddle will be forming beneath you.

She’ll recoil a little before she asks: “Are you here to murder us or hurt us or something?”

You’ll shake your head, sending little droplets of water all around the room.  One of them will land on the girl’s skin.  She’ll taste it, then nod.  It’ll taste like ghost sadness.

The boy will sigh.  “She’d just lie if she was.”

“Nuh-uh,” the girl will say as she steps into her pants, closing the door at long last.  “Ghost code.”

You’ll point at her and nod in assent.  Ghost code does prevent you from lying about wanting to murder teens while they’re sexing on one another.  The boy will throw up his hands and carry his clothes out of the room.

“I’m going back to the Escalade,” he’ll shout behind him.

“Why are you so sad?” the girl will ask, trying to lay her hand on yours but instead passing through it, becoming coated with goo.

You’ll point to the wall and letters will appear in black water:

SEINFELD ENDED.

She’ll bite her lip and nod.

“I think I can help.”

Then she’ll leave.  But two hours later she’ll return with a tiny, cheap TV and the complete DVD box set of Seinfeld.  You’ll stop crying and clap your ghost hands in spectral joy.

THANKS! you’ll make the wall bleed.

She’ll smile.

“No problem.  Have a good eternity!”

You’ll wave goodbye to her and begin watching the Seinfeld DVDs on an endless loop until your building is demolished in thirty years to make way for some sorta future apartments that have robots or something in them.

Congratulations Musketshot Joe!

There’s a lot of ways to engage in domestic violence, all of them horrible and woefully socially acceptable under the tenets of our fucked up, bifurcated society.  It’s incredibly depressing.  But every once in a while someone like you comes along and does something so insane and totally uncool that everyone, and I mean everyone, can sit back together and say “holy shit, that was insane and totally unreasonable.”

Today you’re going to give us that moment when, during a Revolutionary War re-enactment in Lexington (you’ll be representing the town drunk, who infamously fired volley after volley into a nearby tree while wasted on bathtub gin) you beat your wife into unconsciousness with a bag of musketshot in full view of the entire procession.

They’ll be horrified to a man.  The chief of Lexington police, who will be dressed as a Redcoat captain, will beat you bloody with the butt of his rifle until he is hauled off you by several re-enactors from each side.  Then you’ll be taken to a cell where you’ll sit quietly and wonder just where you are.

As you sit in this cell a youtube video of the event (DRUNK REVOLUTIONARY WAR SOLDIER GETS PWNED!) will circulate.  Within an hour and a half it will reach the superintendent of Lexington High, where you’re a shop teacher.  Within six hours he’ll have convened an emergency meeting to discussion your future at the school and within seven hours a formal letter dismissing you from the school will have been drafted, will full support from the teacher’s union.

It’ll be a terrible, incredible moment where the whole community comes together to hate you for your somewhat anachronistic and terribly elaborate act of domestic violence in an incredibly public place.  But don’t despair!  Being fired in this way is going to make you into a “Tron Guy” of sorts.  So get ready for a future of occasionally going to cons, selling t-shirts and getting into fights with women and men who dislike men who beat women!  Also, occasionally you’ll get asked on to a talk show to speak to an absolutely puzzled host.

Congratulations Musketshot Joe!

Super Nerd Sundays Presents: Not Enough Time!

There just isn’t enough time for games these days.

I hop down to the surface of Alderaan, light up my double-bladed saber and start showing bitches what for.  But I can barely clear out one location (roughly twenty to thirty minutes of work, really) before I look at the time and realize, holy shit, I have to teach in seven hours.  I glance wistfully at my class story quest, bite my lip and press escape.  I cycle down to quit game.  I’ll move the ball forward a little more tomorrow night, I silently promise myself.

But this isn’t entirely true.  I’m doing far more than I need to, reading a little less than I probably should and writing with as much regularity as ever – a little more than usual, actually, thanks to some inspiring words and moments from cohorts and mentors and strangers alike.  Is it really my time that is growing less available, or the way I’m arranging it?

Over the last week I’ve become incredibly ill, spent about three full days just looking at apartments with a young man who cannot find the apartments he wants to show me, put down a deposit on a fresh apartment and begun assembling the materials to secure said apartment while fighting off the previously mentioned illness.  And when I think about all this time I’ve been spending being some sort of “adult,” I’m not sure that gaming is actually what I’m sacrificing to do it.  I think what I’m really sacrificing, most of the time, is either my health or my writing.

Gaming is always there, sitting in the background.  But the way I interact with it is what shifts.  For example, during this period of prolonged and severe illness, I didn’t feel like I had the brainpower to play any terribly intense or demanding games or really do any meaningful work (aside from typing up some assignments for my students which, turns out I did wrong).  So what did I do?  Well, I slept a lot.  I walked to Stop and Shop dressed a lot like a crackhead and bought soup, tissues and salad fixin’s and then, while eating my soup and drinking my tea, I sat down and listened to comedy podcasts while playing Civ 5.

It was basically like shutting off my brain for a while and letting it make its own little story.  It was an absolutely glorious waste of time, as Civ games are, and by the time I’d finished I was ready for my next nap.  I’d been awake and stimulated long enough to stave off bedsores.

But all that time I spent playing Civ, which was indeed game time, wasn’t really productive game time.  I’m milking it right now to write about it, but that’s because I have almost nothing else to write about this week – I’ve been crazy sick and I just closed on an apartment during my second week of teaching my first college course, give me a fucking break!  Instead of Civ I could’ve fired up the copy of Quantum Conundrum that my friend Dan got for me, or kept playing one of those bit-violence adventure games I threw down a couple bucks for.  There’s even an impressive looking Rogue-alike about being a space pirate that I am absolutely desperate to sink my teeth into which I’m not willing to let myself try before I can think and learn the way I usually can.

Civilization has been filling in my game time with these patient, penitent moments where I simply wish to let my mind wander, and I don’t mean that as a knock to Civ at all.  That’s what Civ does better than any other turn based strategy game: it provides players with periods of white noise where they get to relax before engaging in brief, frenetic, precisely measured actions.  It’s a brain vacation which is simultaneously beautifully engaging even as it is utterly bereft of real content, real direct challenge.  There is math, invisible, wonderful, mostly scrutible math, running in the background.  This is your real enemy.  There are no apparent puzzles, simply long, arching paths to victory that at times must be chased or changed over to as warranted by the situation.

It’s white noise.  It blocks out other distractions and lets you, in those moments while your turn is processing, realize thing you might not have otherwise realized.  It lets you relax for a few minutes.  It is, in a sense, everything that games usually are not for me.

I normally play games to be engaged, to overcome challenges and to experience a narrative of some sort, even if it’s a narrative I’m creating on my own.  The latter arguably exists within the framework of Civ 5, but it’s in a muted, patient fashion.  It’s sort of delightful.  And this is what my gaming has been over the last week.  A break, or a series of breaks.

It’s not that I want for amazing narrative experiences.  I’m still playing through Catwoman’s bonus series in Arkham City, which is very narrative driven (and character driven) and I’ve got a pile of games left to complete, many of which are quite.  There are games I want to replay, just for their narratives.  But all these games require an intellectual and emotional commitment that a few rounds of Civ do not.

If a twist emerges in Civ (Arabia declares war on me, shattering our alliance!) I can backtrack to a few autosaves and prepare myself a little more so I don’t lose one of my precious few cities in their harsh initial strike.  I have no such brace against the death pervading the most recent Walking Dead episode or the brutal puzzles of Quantum Conundrum.  Civ allows me to give only the tiniest piece of myself over, and in so doing, it lets me recover and restore.  It lets me waste time the way television used to, but in a slightly more productive way.  I never have shower moments with the television blaring.

What I’m saying, I guess, is that there’s always time, even if it doesn’t seem like there is.  We make it.  We carve it out for ourselves.  And sometimes it’s just that we’re not using that time quite as we want to.  I get why a friend of mine exclusively plays Civ when he isn’t grading student papers after sharing a life experience, briefly and minimally, with him.  It’s a nice break, it’s rewarding and, in the end, it’s not hard to walk away from if something more important comes up (which it’s likely to at present).  That’s both a boon and a curse.

Congratulations Incarcerated Pit Bull Mathematician!

You know how yesterday it seemed like things just couldn’t get worse? Well today, while you’re on the bus to go pick up the last of your things on campus, a child is going to start taunting you on the bus. He’s gonna be poking and prodding and petting you in all the wrong ways and when you finally snap and bite him it will decidedly not be your fault.

But the court will not agree. America’s insanely intolerant court system doesn’t seem to appreciate that sometimes kids deserve to be bitten by dogs, and its failure to see this will put you, one of the most brilliant mathematicians in American history, behind bars. Really, behind a chain link fence in a kennel where you’ll await execution until your ex-wife, who happens to be a lawyer, comes in and represents you during your appeals case, which will be a civil rights landmark case justifying the biting of children by dogs.

Your ex-wife will also have one last quickie with you after you’re free, which the press will somehow learn about, so despite this career making case she’ll be disgraced for years to come. Because it’s one thing to be instrumental in a truly singular supreme court case, but it’s entirely another to do anything even a little bit weird, sex wise, with a dog who happens to be your husband.

Congratulations Pit Bull Mathematician!

The tenure review board will barely wait for you to sit down. They’ll begin speaking while you finish your second meandering circle. You’ll rush to hit the floor to show respect and your leg will twitch in frustration.

“We fear,” the review board chair will announce, “that we cannot provide tenure to someone of such…distinct physical characteristics.”

You’ll bark in rage, then start speaking.

“But the papers I’ve written and co-written-“

“Holy shit, a talking dog,” one of the tenure review board members will mumble even as the chair interrupts you anew.

“We’re well aware of your contributions to the field. We weighed all of these matters quite seriously during our discussions, but we cannot allow-“

You’ll bark, hopping up to your feet as you do so and silencing the tenure review chair instantly.

“This is blatant discrimination! I could sue you! This could be a landmark case for superintelligent lab animals discriminated against in academic settings! This is a travesty!”

“Down boy!” the tenure review chair will shout, drawing gasps from his fellow board members. Silence will fall upon the room. Your tail will be completely still.

“It’s clear, then, what I have to do next. Good day, sirs and madams. Good day.”

You’ll trot back out the door past security, a part of you glimmering even as the devastation of another tenure denial sinks in. Because even though it’s awful to have to deal with racism, this time you’ve got a bundle of witnesses and a strong chance at a discrimination suit. Now you just have to keep your nose clean and lawyer up.

Congratulations on Having an Accident on the Way to Jail!

A funny thing is going to happen to you on the way to prison. The cop you spit in the face of (and then said “Welcome to Hepatitis,” to, a classic bit) is going to kick you in the back around your kidney as hard as he can. He’ll want to leave a bruise for you to think about while you sit on a hard wooden bench in booking.

What he’ll actually do is kick you so hard that the concussive force will make your innards shift about dramatically, pressing your colon into its contents, specifically a straight razor blade (no safety) that you brought with you in case some shit went down while you were in the poke.

The razor will push against the flesh of your colon and displace the mass of skin and muscle that normally regulates the flow of your waste, breaching it almost effortlessly. This will cause excrement to mix with your blood and internal tissues less acclimated to its tender ministrations. Given the incredibly virulent bacteria and the bevy of toxins present in said colon, you’ll begin rotting from the inside out.

The pain will be tremendous, but the cop who kicked you will ignore your squirms and grunts. He’ll just toss you into a holding area and lock the door without looking back. As you sit there on the bench, painfully aware of what must’ve just happened, you’ll smile at yourself, thinking of how great a story this will make years from now if you don’t die of sepsis during the next forty to eighty minutes. Your kids are gonna get a hoot out of “dad’s don’t put razors up your butt story!”

Congratulations on Masking Yourself in Her Scent!

She’ll come in the door suddenly, in a rush of air, fifteen minutes early. She won’t say a word because she’ll assume the apartment is empty. Why wouldn’t it be? Why would her mentally deranged ex-boyfriend be in her bathroom, going through her things and trying his very best to clean his “lady traps,” which he uses to collect samples of her genetic material which he hopes to one use in an elaborate cloning experiment of some sort?

Because that deranged boyfriend is you. And you won’t want to be caught, because getting caught would make the kind of high level science you plan on doing absolutely impossible. So you will, in the spirit of all great scientists, make a split second decision to sacrifice dignity for the ability to continue your work. You’ll open the toilet bowl and, sure enough, there will be a big old puddle of hippy dippy cold urine in there. Real stanky first pee of the morning stuff that she won’t flush for the sake of the environment or some bullshit like that. And you, being the good man you are, will shove your head right in there. Then you’ll spread it all around on yourself and let it drip down your shoulders and clothes, coating your thoroughly in her scent. Well, one of her scents. Specifically the scent of her urine.

Then you’ll leap into her shower and focus on being as quiet as you can, just like you did when you were a kid. When she opens the door she’ll be assaulted by the smell of her own urine, freshly stirred up by your efforts. She’ll hold her nose as she peers around, looking to see if something went terribly wrong.

“Jesus Christ,” she’ll mumble. “Did the toilet blow up while I was at work?”

You’ll chuckle at this – you won’t be able to stop yourself. She always was so funny. But the chuckle will give you away and she’ll rip open the shower curtain to expose you there, pants around your ankles, with ziplock bags of her hair clutched in each hand.

You’ll manage to say “Hey Sara,” before the mace takes you and annihilates your capacity for speech. Later, you’ll relate this story to the police. They won’t find nearly as funny as you (and we) do.

Congratulations on Masking Yourself in Her Scent!
